The Greek Film Society Sydney is excited to share Olia Verriopoulou’s new Greek-language documentary ‘Stories of a Lie’ screens as part of Antenna Documentary Film Festival’s 2026 program. Head to http://www.antennafestival.org/ to find out more! 

Synopsis: During a stay in Greece, Olia is informed her childhood friend has cancer – and her friends, family and even doctors are hiding it from her. This is not some conspiratorial plot, but rather a practice Olia recognises from her own upbringing: the long-standing tradition of offering “medical lies” in the name of care. Gentle, curious, and quietly disarming, Stories of a Lie explores the fragile ways we navigate illness, love, and the truths we choose to share — or to withhold — and ultimately lets the question ‘Is it right to lie?’ unfold into a deeper one: how we care for one another at the edge of the unknowable.

Antenna Documentary Film Festival is an annual program hosted in Sydney that celebrates both internationally acclaimed and exciting homegrown non-fiction cinema. Σύνοψη: Κατά τη διάρκεια της διαμονής της στην Ελλάδα, η Όλια πληροφορείται ότι η παιδική της φίλη έχει καρκίνο και ότι οι φίλοι, η οικογένεια, ακόμη και οι γιατροί της το κρύβουν. Δεν μιλάμε για κάποιο σενάριο συνομωσίας αλλά για κάτι που η Όλια αναγνωρίζει ως μέρος της δικής της ανατροφής: την φροντίδα ως άλλοθι και την απόκρυψη της αλήθειας, μια μακρόχρονη ιατρική πρακτική. Τρυφερή, στοχαστική και διακριτικά αποκαλυπτική, η ταινία «Ιστορίες ενός Ψέματος» διερευνά τις εύθραυστες μορφές με τις οποίες αντιμετωπίζουμε την ασθένεια, την αγάπη και τις αλήθειες που επιλέγουμε να μοιραστούμε, ή να αποκρύψουμε, και τελικά αφήνει το ερώτημα «Είναι σωστό να λέμε ψέματα;» να ξεδιπλωθεί σε ένα πιο βαθύτερο: πώς φροντίζουμε ο ένας τον άλλον στα όρια του αγνώστου.

The King 2002, 129′ Nikos Grammatikos

 Thirty-five-year-old Vangelis, once addicted and involved in a drug trafficking network, is released from prison ‘clean’ and tries to restart his life. He settles in the deserted village of Paradesi, where he restores his family’s old house and finds work with migrant labourers. Despite his efforts the local community greets him with distrust and resentment and the village police officer becomes his sole ally. When his partner Maria arrives, her presence fuels the villagers’ envy and deepens Vangelis’s isolation.

Ο Βασιλιάς 2002, 129΄ Σκ. Νίκος Γραμματικός

Ο 35χρονος Βαγγέλης, πρώην χρήστης και μέλος κυκλώματος ναρκωτικών, αποφυλακίζεται «καθαρός» και προσπαθεί να ξαναρχίσει τη ζωή του στο εγκαταλελειμμένο Παραδείσι. Επισκευάζει το πατρικό του και δουλεύει με αλλοδαπούς εργάτες, μα συναντά καχυποψία και εχθρότητα από τους ντόπιους και ο μοναδικός του φίλος θα γίνει ο αστυνόμος της περιοχής. Η άφιξη της συντρόφου του Μαρίας πυροδοτεί τον φθόνο των κατοίκων και οδηγεί στον εξοστρακισμό του.

Five short films created by women filmmakers, aiming to highlight the dynamic presence of women in contemporary Greek cinema. Πρόκειται για πέντε ταινίες μικρού μήκους από γυναίκες δημιουργούς και στοχεύει στην ανάδειξη της δυναμικής παρουσίας των γυναικών στον σύγχρονο ελληνικό κινηματογράφο.

The isolation of the Greek countryside combined with the lifestyle that a musical instrument maker leads, a lifestyle that many would consider peculiar, creates an interesting reality, one that is simple, yet unconventional. A portrait that will introduce us to the world of flamenco, uniting cultures and musical traditions around the world.

A Couple of Years, 86′ Dir. Lydia Konsta

In 1960, 600,000 Greeks immigrated to Germany to live as workers, the so called Gastarbeiters. Descendants of this migration stream, Teo, Aglaia, and Vasso, allow us a glimpse of their daily lives and reveal the effects of that migration on their present and future: The film captures the encounter of two cultures and their interaction in contemporary socio-political developments.

For A Red Shirt, 56′ Dir. Nikos Theodosiou & Dimitris Spyrou

By a remarkable coincidence, the invention of cinema coincides with the first major wave of Greek immigration to America. Inspired by this event, the film unravels the thread of immigration from that time to the great crisis of the 21st century, through its cinematic recordings with unknown or rare documents.

Από μια αναπάντεχη σύμπτωση, η εφεύρεση του κινηματογράφου συμπίπτει με το πρώτο μεγάλο μεταναστευτικό ρεύμα των Ελλήνων στην Αμερική. Με αφορμή αυτό το γεγονός, στην ταινία ξετυλίγεται το κουβάρι της μετανάστευσης, από την εποχή εκείνη μέχρι τη μεγάλη κρίση του 21ου αιώνα, μέσα από τις κινηματογραφικές καταγραφές της.

The Charcoal Makers of Ikaria 2025, 120′ Dir. Manos Arvanitakis

The story of the charcoal makers of Ikaria who worked all over Greece in the past to make this valuable fuel that preceded the age of petroleum. Ikarian men and women talk about the hardships of the past, as the film follows the process of a firing from beginning to end on the island. Descendants of Ikarians can be found in different areas of Greece where they brought their values and way of life to local communities. A beautifully shot film with a gallery of larger-than-life characters who convey a unique life and times.

Οι καρβουνιάρηδες της Ικαρίας, 120′ Σκ. Μάνος Αρβανιτάκης

Η ιστορία των καρβουνιάρηδων της Ικαρίας που δούλευαν σε όλη την Ελλάδα για να φτιάξουν το πολύτιμο καύσιμο που προηγήθηκε της εποχής του πετρελαίου. Ικαριώτες άνδρες και γυναίκες μιλούν για τις κακουχίες του παρελθόντος, καθώς παρακολουθούμε στο νησί το στήσιμο και καύση ενός καμινιού. Απόγονοι Ικαριωτών σε διάφορες περιοχές της Ελλάδας μιλούν για τις αξίες και τον τρόπο ζωής που εισήγαγαν οι καρβουνιάρηδες στις τοπικές κοινωνίες. Μια καλογυρισμένη ταινία με αυθεντικούς νησιώτες αφηγητές που μας μεταφέρουν σε παλιές εποχές και σ’ έναν μοναδικό τρόπο ζωής.

Animal 2023, 116΄ Dir. Sofia Exarchou

This multiple award-winning second feature by its director turns a spotlight on the Greek tourist industry with the story of a team of seasonal entertainers at a cheap island resort. Kalia, the team’s leader, trains and mentors younger performers—versions of her younger self. But now in her 30s, the gruelling routine of repetitive performance is taking its toll on her body and mind. As the summer progresses, she struggles to keep up. But the show must go on. A powerful story about the psychic alienation of labour in the contemporary world.

Animal 2023, 116΄ Σκ. Σοφία Εξάρχου

Στην πολυβραβευμένη ταινία της, η σκηνοθέτιδα εστιάζει στην ελληνική τουριστική βιομηχανία με επίκεντρο την ιστορία μιας ομάδας εποχιακών ανιματέρ (διασκεδαστών) σε ένα φτηνό νησιωτικό θέρετρο. Η Κάλια, η αρχηγός της ομάδας, εκπαιδεύει και καθοδηγεί τα νεότερα μέλη, εκδοχές του νεότερου εαυτού της. Αλλά τώρα, τριαντάρα πια, έχει φθαρεί σωματικά και ψυχικά από την εξαντλητική ρουτίνα των παραστάσεων. Καθώς το καλοκαίρι προχωρά, παλεύει να αντεπεξέλθει. Αλλά «η παράσταση πρέπει να συνεχιστεί». Μια δυνατή ιστορία για την ψυχική αλλοτρίωση της εργασίας στον σύγχρονο κόσμο.

Dourgouti Town 2024, 88΄ Dir. Dimitris Bavellas

This recently released and successful documentary tells the story of Dourgouti, an old shantytown neighbourhood in Athens, only a stone’s throw from the Acropolis. Drawing on the experiences of old and new residents, the film explores a neighbourhood, once a welcoming space for Greek and Armenian refugees, as well as internal migrants, but now experiencing rapid gentrification. Told with humour and the passionate testimonies of interviewees, it offers an insight into the cultural history of an Athenian neighbourhood, beyond tourist stereotypes. While the story of Dourgouti’s urban history is intertwined with the major historical events of Greece, it poses the universal dilemmas of urban change and loss.

ΔΟΥΡΓΟΥΤΙ 2024, 88΄ Σκ. Δημήτρης Μπαβέλλας

Ένα πρόσφατο και επιτυχημένο ντοκιμαντέρ, αφηγείται την ιστορία του Δουργουτιού, μιας παλιάς παραγκούπολης της Αθήνας, σε απόσταση αναπνοής από την Ακρόπολη. Αντλώντας από τις εμπειρίες παλιών και νέων κατοίκων, η ταινία εξερευνά μια γειτονιά που κάποτε ήταν ένας φιλόξενος χώρος για Έλληνες και Αρμένιους πρόσφυγες, καθώς και εσωτερικούς μετανάστες, αλλά σήμερα βιώνει ταχύ εξευγενισμό. Με χιούμορ και ζωντανές μαρτυρίες των συνεντευξιαζόμενων, αποτυπώνει την πολιτιστική ιστορία μιας αθηναϊκής γειτονιάς, πέρα από τα τουριστικά στερεότυπα. Ενώ η ιστορία του Δουργουτιού είναι συνυφασμένη με τα σημαντικά ιστορικά γεγονότα της Ελλάδας, αναδεικνύει τα διλήμματα που εγείρει το παγκόσμιο φαινόμενο της αστικής αλλαγής και της απώλειας.

In a lakeside town on the country’s northern border town, and at the height of the recent Greek economic crisis, a middle-aged fisherman, facing mounting debts, begins smuggling refugees across the lake. But events take a tragic turn. The film reconstructs events through the eyes of three members of a local family: a father who puts his principles aside for financial gain, a wife afraid to rock the boat, and a daughter struggling to assert her independence. A powerful story that explores the moral dilemmas of a society and its complicity in the exploitation of refugees. Shot in a beautiful and haunting location, this superbly crafted debut feature has won acclaim both domestically and internationally.
