Important notice:
Due to the increased Covid-19 restrictions in the Inner West area, we have decided to postpone Thursday’s screenings (Thursday 24th June at 7pm) until 29 July at 7pm (the last Thursday of the month). The decision was made to minimise risk to health and to ensure a good turnout for the programmed screening. Long-term subscriptions will be extended for a month. Wishing you all a safe and healthy month until we recommence our program.

In the early 1950s, a proud master of the traditional shadow theatre finds himself competing with the rising popularity of cinema. As he struggles to keep his audiences and his financial viability, he comes into conflict with his young apprentices and sister looking towards a different future. Starring well-known actors Kostas Kazakos and Giorgos Ninios.
Τhe film was Greece’s official entry in the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

Summary: The lone inhabitant of a monastery, a middle-aged monk, faces the death of his beloved dog and the survival of his new-born pups just as the Archbishop dies and the worldly business of succession begins. The dog’s signal death signals the return of an unbearable sadness and loneliness in the monk’s life which brings up the past and forces him to reappraise his solitary course. A tender cinematic evocation of monastic life and a study in loneliness. An adaptation of Yannis Makridakis’ novel of the same name, the film was Winner of the Youth Jury Award at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.

A poignant tale of exile and nostalgia told through a mix of documentary and fictional techniques. Following the collapse of the Military Junta in Greece, eighteen hundred Greek political refugees and their children return to Greece after 35 years of exile in the village of Beloiannisz in Hungary. A story of return with an ironic twist. Awarded Best Director and Best Musical Score by Eleni Karaindrou at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.
