Newborn Sky: Women in the Democratic Army of Greece – 75′ – 2021 (Dir. Giannis Xydas & Tasos Konstantopoulos)

After the liberation of Athens from German occupation in 1944, conflict broke out between
those who had fought against the Germans and those who had collaborated with them, and
later, the British and American forces. Following an agreement to disarm, Greece was plunged
into civil war, with the former resistance fighters taking to the mountains to escape right-wing
persecution. Women fighters were among them. This documentary tells the story of the women who took up arms as equals to their male counterparts, and their experience of war, imprisonment and exile.

Καινούργιος ουρανός: Οι γυναίκες στον Δημοκρατικό Στρατό Ελλάδος – 75′ – 2021 (Dir. Giannis Xydas & Tasos Konstantopoulos)

Μετά την απελευθέρωση της Αθήνας (1944) από τον Ελληνικό Λαϊκό Απελευθερωτικό Στρατό
(ΕΛΑΣ), ξέσπασε σύγκρουση μεταξύ όσων είχαν πολεμήσει εναντίον των Γερμανών και όσων
είχαν συνεργαστεί μαζί τους, και που στη συνέχεια συνεργάστηκαν με τις Βρετανικές και
Αμερικανικές δυνάμεις. Μετά από τη συμφωνία της Βάρκιζας, η Ελλάδα βυθίστηκε σε εμφύλιο
πόλεμο, με τους πρώην αντιστασιακούς να καταφεύγουν στα βουνά για να γλιτώσουν από τον
κατατρεγμό της δεξιάς. Ανάμεσά τους ήταν και γυναίκες αγωνίστριες. Το ντοκιμαντέρ αφηγείται
την ιστορία των γυναικών αυτών, που πήραν τα όπλα στα χέρια τους, και ως ίσες με τους
άντρες, βίωσαν τα σκληρά χρόνια του εμφυλίου, τις φυλάκισεις και τις εξορίες.

My Rembetika Blues 2023, 83′, Dir. Mary Zournazi

Local filmmaker Mary Zournazi traces the journey of her forebears from Smyrna in Turkey to
Sydney Australia but discovers more than family history. She finds out how music connects
people during times of struggle and crises. The documentary explores how Rembetika music,
through its rawness and unique style, provides one of the world’s foremost musical accounts
of migrant experience and urban blues. By weaving together different stories and interviews,
the film looks at the legacies of history and migration, and how music can connect people in
times of struggle and need.

A Q & A  with the director will take place after the screening.

Η Ελληνο-Αυστραλή σκηνοθέτιδα Μαίρη Ζουρνάζη, ακολουθόντας τα χνάρια των προγόνων
της από τη Σμύρνη και την Αίγυπτο ώς το Σίδνεϊ, ανακαλύπτει κάτι περισσότερο από μια
οικογενειακή ιστορία. Διαπιστώνει πώς η παλιά ρεμπέτικη μουσική, συνδέει τους ανθρώπους,
σε περιόδους αγώνων και κρίσεων. Η μοναδική αυτή μουσική, με τη ζωντάνια και το ιδιαίτερό
της ύφος, παρέχει στο κόσμο της μουσικής, μια κορυφαία, καταγραφή της μεταναστευτικής
εμπειρίας και του αστικού καημού. Συνυφαίνοντας διαφορετικές ιστορίες και συνεντεύξεις,
η ταινία παρουσιάζει κληρονομιές της ιστορίας και της μετανάστευσης, καταλήγοντας στο
συμπέρασμα πως η μουσική μπορεί να ενώσει τους ανθρώπους.

Mother of the Station 2023, 79 ́, Dir. Kostoula Tomadaki

A moving account of the heartaches and sacrifices experienced by young Greek women who migrated to Germany as industrial ‘guest workers’ (Gastarbeiter) in the 1960s and early 1970s. Through intergenerational interviews and archival footage that bring to life conditions in Greece and Germany, as well as the difficulties of family separation and dislocation, the documentary focuses on the resilience of these hard-working women and their children. An intimate insight into the long-term transformations and emotional traumas that postwar migration brought about and the ongoing push and pull of economic migration. A story of constant journeys between two very different worlds.

Ένα συγκινητικό ντοκιμαντέρ για τον ψυχικό πόνο και τις θυσίες που βίωσαν νεαρές ελληνίδες
που μετανάστευσαν στην Γερμανία ως εργάτριες στη δεκαετία του ‘60 ως και τις αρχές του ‘70.
Μέσω συνεντεύξεων με μητέρες και κόρες, και τη χρήση αρχειακού υλικού, η ταινία ζωντανεύει
τις τότε συνθήκες της Ελλάδας και της Γερμανίας, παρουσιάζοντας τόσο τις δυσκολίες του
χωρισμού, όσο και την ψυχική αντοχή που χρειάστηκε να αναπτύξουν οι μετανάστριες και τα
παιδιά τους. Μια οικεία εικόνα για τις μακροπρόθεσμες αλλαγές και συναισθηματικά τραύματα
που επέφερε η μεταπολεμική μετανάστευση, και που η σύγχρονη μετανάστευση των νέων
από την Ελλάδα συνεχίζει να δημιουργεί. Μια ιστορία με αδιάκοπα ταξίδια ανάμεσα σε δύο
διαφορετικούς κόσμους.

A beautifully shot documentary about the Aegean Island of Ikaria where centenarians abound, and its lifestyle and festivities attract young people from around the world. The communal life and hardships of the past are narrated by older islanders while younger people talk about their special ties to the island. Narrating multiple stories that reflect the island’s history up to recent times, the documentary reveals the island’s uniqueness and independent lifestyle.

Η κοινωνική ζωή και οι κακουχίες του παρελθόντος εξιστορούνται από τους ηλικιωμένους, ενώ οι νεότεροι μιλούν για τους ιδιαίτερους δεσμούς τους με το νησί. The Taverna, 2019, 86’, Dir. Alkinos Tsilimidos

Kostas (played by the inimitable Vangelis Mourikis) runs a popular suburban Greek taverna. When belly dancer Jamila refuses to dance after spotting her ex at a table with his lover Rebecca, waitress Sally decides to step into the breach. Throw into the mix sleazy groping customers, an impromptu kidnapping, rampaging possums, and Kostas’s drug-addict son, and you have a recipe for an absolutely chaotic night. Local director Tsilimidos delivers an entertaining dark comedy about ethnic life in Australia.

Ο Κώστας (Βαγγέλης Μουρίκης), ιδιοκτήτης ταβέρνας σε προάστιο της Μελβούρνης, αγωνίζεται σκληρά να βάλλει τάξη στην επιχείρησή του. Όταν η χορεύτρια της κοιλιάς, Τζαμίλα, αρνείται να χορέψει αφού εντόπισε τον πρώην της σε ένα τραπέζι με την φιλενάδα του, η σερβιτόρα Σάλι αποφασίζει να την αντικαταστήσει. Ρίξτε στην μίξη άχαρους πελάτες που ψαχουλεύουν τις σερβιτόρες, μια αυτοσχέδια απαγωγή, ένα άγριο πόσουμ και το ναρκομανή γιο του Κώστα, και έχετε μια συνταγή για μια απόλυτα χαοτική νύχτα. Ο ντόπιος σκηνοθέτης Τσιλιμιδός μας παραδίδει μια διασκεδαστική μαύρη κωμωδία για την μεταναστευτική ζωή της Αυστραλίας.

The Journey of Askavlos 2020, 88΄, Dir. Υorgos Arvanitis

A fascinating music documentary about the ancient Greek bagpipe, the askavlos and its revival in the Aegean islands where young and old meet regularly to play, sing and dance in the spirit of continuing and renewing centuries-old traditions. An intimate insight into contemporary island and urban musical trends that reveal how social and musical elements combine in a joyous and meaningful way.

Golden Dawn: A Public Affair, 2021, 123΄, Dir. Angélique Kourounis

A documentary that covers the five-year trial of the neo-Nazi organisation Golden Dawn for its cold-blooded murder of the rapper Pavlos Fyssas and other crimes committed in Greece. It captures the momentous struggle between the antifascist movement and Golden Dawn which culminated in guilty verdicts for the latter’s leaders and henchmen in 2021. A powerful account of the rise and temporary defeat of a pernicious phenomenon in a European country. Golden Dawn’s appeal against its conviction is currently in the courts.

Χρυσή Αυγή: Υπόθεση Όλων μας, 2021, 123΄, Σκ. Ανζελίκ Κουρούνη

Ένα ντοκιμαντέρ-ρεπορτάζ που καλύπτει την πενταετή δίκη της Χρυσής Αυγής, της νεοναζιστικής οργάνωσης που καταδικάστηκε για την εν ψυχρώ δολοφονία του ράπερ Παύλου Φύσσα και για άλλα εγκλήματα που διαπράχθηκαν στην Ελλάδα. Αποτυπώνει τη βαρυσήμαντη πάλη μεταξύ του αντιφασιστικού κινήματος και της Χρυσής Αυγής που κορυφώθηκε με ένοχες ετυμηγορίες για τους ηγέτες και τους μπράβους της οργάνωσης, το 2021. Μια ισχυρή αφήγηση της ανόδου και της προσωρινής ήττας ενός ολέθριου φαινομένου.

Daniel ‘16, (2020), 101′, Dir. Dimitris Koutsiabasakos

Daniel, a German teenager, is sent to Greece under a European scheme, to serve his sentence in a remote juvenile offender community near the border with Turkey where refugees make the dangerous crossing over the Evros river. From a disturbed and rebellious young man, he gradually becomes aware of the cruelty and disfunction around him, finding within himself a growing maturity and compassion for those younger and more helpless than himself. A sensitive and affecting story about a young man who makes a surprising decision for his future. An award-winning feature from an acclaimed filmmaker.

Ο Daniel, ένας Γερμανός έφηβος, στέλνεται στην Ελλάδα βάση ευρωπαϊκού προγράμματος, για να εκτίσει την ποινή του σε μια απομακρυσμένη κοινότητα ανήλικων παραβατών, κοντά στα σύνορα, εκεί όπου πρόσφυγες επιχειρούν την διέλευση του επικίνδυνου ποταμού Έβρου. Ο αρχικά διαταραγμένος και επαναστατημένος νέος, μεταβάλλεται σταδιακά, όταν συνειδητοποιεί την σκληρότητα και την δυσλειτουργία των γύρω του, εκφράζοντας από μέσα του μια νέα ωριμότητα και συμπόνια για τους νεότερους και πιο ανήμπορους. Multi-award-winning first feature adapted from Christos Tsiolkas’s novel Loaded, this film throws the audience headlong into a day in the life of a conflicted young gay man Aris, up against a society and family environment that makes it impossible for him to find love and peace.

Master of the Shadows, 1991, 105΄, Dir. Lefteris Xanthopoulos
(A special screening commemorating the late director, 1945-2020)

In the early 1950s, a proud master of the traditional shadow theatre finds himself competing with the rising popularity of cinema. As he struggles to keep his audiences and his financial viability, he comes into conflict with his young apprentices and sister looking towards a different future. Τhe film was Greece’s official entry in the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival.

Καθώς παλεύει να διατηρήσει το κοινό του και να επιβιώσει οικονομικά, έρχεται σε σύγκρουση με τους νεαρούς μαθητευόμενους και την αδερφή του που αναζητούν ένα διαφορετικό μέλλον.
