Following our winter break, we are excited to announce our upcoming September screenings featuring some of the outstanding films presented at this year’s Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival. This will be a special two-day screening event, with our first evening taking place next Thursday 10 September at 7pm at the Greek Atlas Community and Cultural Centre, 96 Illawarra Rd, Marrickville.
We will be screening two films:
1. Square of the Unseen(31’) 2025 Greece colour, direction & script Theodore Selekos.
In the heart of Athens, Omonia Square stands as a paradox amid the city’s gentrification. We move through this hidden world, where lives on the margins leave handwritten traces etched onto urban surfaces. Through these words and images, the film reveals an Athens of shadows and truths rarely seen.
2. The Night Smells of Jasmine (70’) 2025 Greece B/W, direction & script Antonis Kokkinos.
Inside Korydallos women’s prison, incarcerated women share fragments of their lives before and during imprisonment. Through memories, daily routines, and the choices that shaped them, the film weaves individual voices into a collective portrait of life behind bars and enduring hope.
The Kitchen is Back! The Atlas kitchen is finally back open from 5 pm on screening nights! Come early, grab something delicious, catch up with everyone and settle in before the film starts. And by supporting the kitchen, you’re also helping us keep it open on screening nights. So, arrive early, bring your appetite and make a night of it!
A second screening will follow on Thursday 24 September at 7 pm at the Greek Atlas Community and Cultural Centre, 96 Illawarra Rd, Marrickville.
Two more films will be screened:
1. Single Headlocks (50’) 2025 Greece, colour, direction Panagiotis Papoutsis & script Nikos Kallipolitis, Panagiotis Papoutsis.Maria Prevolaraki’s journey follows a Greek athlete fighting against hardship, limited support, and relentless conditions as she chases what may be her final Olympic chance. Her story reveals a lifelong struggle on and off the mat, driven by resilience, passion, and an unbreakable vow to rise every time she falls.
After a motorbike accident left him paralysed from the waist down, Antonis Tsapatakis turns to swimming and becomes a Paralympic athlete. Through training, family and everyday moments the film observes the slow process of redefining identity, resilience and freedom after irrevocable changes of life.

The Greek Film Society Sydney is excited to share Olia Verriopoulou’s new Greek-language documentary ‘Stories of a Lie’ screens as part of Antenna Documentary Film Festival’s 2026 program. Head to http://www.antennafestival.org/ to find out more!
Synopsis: During a stay in Greece, Olia is informed her childhood friend has cancer – and her friends, family and even doctors are hiding it from her. This is not some conspiratorial plot, but rather a practice Olia recognises from her own upbringing: the long-standing tradition of offering “medical lies” in the name of care. Gentle, curious, and quietly disarming, Stories of a Lie explores the fragile ways we navigate illness, love, and the truths we choose to share — or to withhold — and ultimately lets the question ‘Is it right to lie?’ unfold into a deeper one: how we care for one another at the edge of the unknowable.
Screening on Saturday 7th of February 4:45pm at Dendy Newtown & Friday 13th of February 6.30pm Ritz Cinemas

στα Ritz Cinemas

In Strumica, North Macedonia, maestro Biko Agusev proudly upholds his family’s rich tradition of Balkan music. Each year, the enchanting sounds of Biko and his brass band resonate through the air as they join their Greek friends, captivating crowds with their thunderous and unique melodies during the vibrant carnival festivities of Naoussa, Greece.Ο Μπίκο και η ορχήστρα του, Σκ.
The Luthier, 75′ Dir. Yiannis Kostavaras
The isolation of the Greek countryside combined with the lifestyle that a musical instrument maker leads, a lifestyle that many would consider peculiar, creates an interesting reality, one that is simple, yet unconventional. A portrait that will introduce us to the world of flamenco, uniting cultures and musical traditions around the world.
Our next screening will feature two films from this year’s 27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival: A Couple of Years and A Red Shirt. We are looking forward to seeing you on Thursday 11th September 2025 at 7pm ( Πέμπτη 11 Σεπτεμβρίου 2025 7μμ). A Couple of Years, 86′ Dir. Lydia Konsta
In 1960, 600,000 Greeks immigrated to Germany to live as workers, the so called Gastarbeiters. Descendants of this migration stream, Teo, Aglaia, and Vasso, allow us a glimpse of their daily lives and reveal the effects of that migration on their present and future: The film captures the encounter of two cultures and their interaction in contemporary socio-political developments.
For A Red Shirt, 56′ Dir. Nikos Theodosiou & Dimitris Spyrou
By a remarkable coincidence, the invention of cinema coincides with the first major wave of Greek immigration to America. Inspired by this event, the film unravels the thread of immigration from that time to the great crisis of the 21st century, through its cinematic recordings with unknown or rare documents.

The Charcoal Makers of Ikaria2025, 120′ Dir. Manos Arvanitakis
The story of the charcoal makers of Ikaria who worked all over Greece in the past to make this valuable fuel that preceded the age of petroleum. Ikarian men and women talk about the hardships of the past, as the film follows the process of a firing from beginning to end on the island. Descendants of Ikarians can be found in different areas of Greece where they brought their values and way of life to local communities. A beautifully shot film with a gallery of larger-than-life characters who convey a unique life and times.

Following the screening of the film we invite our audience to stay behind for a Q & A with the Director Manos Arvanitakis.

Animal 2023, 116΄ Dir. Sofia Exarchou
This multiple award-winning second feature by its director turns a spotlight on the Greek tourist industry with the story of a team of seasonal entertainers at a cheap island resort. Kalia, the team’s leader, trains and mentors younger performers—versions of her younger self. But now in her 30s, the gruelling routine of repetitive performance is taking its toll on her body and mind. As the summer progresses, she struggles to keep up. But the show must go on. A powerful story about the psychic alienation of labour in the contemporary world.
Animal 2023, 116΄ Σκ.
Following the screening, a Q & A will be available to our audience.
