The Greek Film Society in Sydney is pleased to announce the screening of the recently-completed hot documentary: “The Lost Signal of Democracy” on Thursday 18 September, 7pm at the Cyprus Community Club, 58 Stanmore Road. As always, we will have a discussion after the screening and this time we will have the opportunity to talk directly with the director of the documentary, Yorgos Avgeropoulos, via Skype. The film is about the “sudden death” of the Greek public broadcaster ERT in 2013. We would be more than happy to see you and your friends at the screening.

A quick reminder that this Thursday 21 August 7pm we are screening two
films by director Tom Cowan, the short 1968 documentary “Helena of
Sydney” and the 1975 feature “Promised Woman”. The evening is also a
tribute to the late Thodoros Patrikareas, playwright of the original
play and co-writer of the film adaptation.

Tom Cowan, a veteran of the Australian film industry, as
cinematographer, director, producer and writer, will be a guest on the
night.

Don Mamouney, long-time director of Sidetrack Theatre and the director
of the 2000 successful production of Patrikareas’ play “Promised
Woman” will also be a guest for the screenings. A short video excerpt
from the stage production will be screened to illustrate the long
journey of the original 1963 play “Throw Away Your Harmonica, Pepino”.

After the screenings, there will be an opportunity for discussion and
questions.

The screenings take place, upstairs at the Cyprus Community Club of
NSW (58 Stanmore Rd, Stanmore). Free parking available.

Meals are available from 6pm at the Cyprus Community Club restaurant.

Screenings are open to all and membership is required at the following
rates: minimum membership fee (with one-off screening): $5, 3 month
membership: $10, 6 month membership: $20, annual membership: $35.

Σας υπενθυμίζουμε πως αυτή τη Πέμπτη 21 Αυγούστου 7μμ προβάλλονται δύο
ταινίες σκηνοθετημένες από τον Τομ Κάουν, το ντοκιμαντέρ “Η Έλενα στο
Σίδνεϊ” (1968) και τη μεγάλου μήκους ταινία “Η Λογοδοσμένη” (1975). Η
βραδιά είναι αφιερωμένη στον εκλιπόντα Θόδωρο Πατρικαρέα, συγγραφέας
του θεατρικού έργου στο οποίο βασίστηκε η ταινία του οποίου σεναρίου
συνυπέγραψε και ο ίδιος.

Ένας από τους καλεσμένους της βραδιάς είναι ο Τομ Καόυν, βετεράνος του
αυστραλέζικου κινηματογράφου, ως διευθυντής φωτογραφίας, σκηνοθέτης,
σεναριογράφος και παραγωγός.

Επίσης καλεσμένος είναι ο Ντον Μαμούνη, επί χρόνια διευθυντής του
θίασου Sidetrack και σκηνοθέτης της επετυχημένης θεατρικής παράστασης
το 2000 του έργου του Πατρικαρέα. Θα προβληθεί ένα μικρό
βιντεοσκοπημένο απόσπασμα από τη θεατρική παράσταση ως τεκμήριο του
μακρινού ταξιδιού του αρχικόυ θεατρικού έργου “Πέτα τη φυσαρμόνικα,
Πεπίνο” του 1963.

Μετά τις προβολές θα ακολουθήσει συζήτηση.

Οι προβολές γίνονται στην επάνω αίθουσα της Κυπριακής Λέσχης ΝΝΟ (58
Stanmore Rd, Stanmore). Πάρκινγκ ελεύθερο εντός του χώρου.

For those who couldn’t make it to the screening last Thursday, here is “Polka in Athens”, a documentary that captures beautifully something of the eternal cycle of immigration; “polyphonic and authentic in its contradictions” as one of the audience members described it.

A highly recommended documentary on the struggle of the local Keratea community against the construction of a waste depository in an archaeological site. Further to the film we screened last Thursday as part of the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival – Regional Events program, this is a different take on the same issue.

Regional Event of the 16th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (2014).

This is the 2nd year running that we are hosting this unique
travelling festival from Greece. It is a great opportunity to sample a
cross-section of contemporary documentary productions from that

Last Thursday we screened Theo Angelopoulos’ Reconstruction (1970). Here is a review of the film by a member of the society, Ben Ferris, who attended the screening.

This is a reminder for tonight’s Greek Film Society Sydney’s June
screening of Theo Angelopoulos feature RECONSTRUCTION (1970).

The screening will take place on Thursday 7pm 19 June, upstairs at the

Synopsis:

Shot in black-and-white, the film recounts through flash-backs the murder in
a remote village of a returning migrant worker by his wife and her lover.
Through the police Œreconstruction¹ of events and the portrait of a slowly
dying community, the film creates resonances to wider national realities of
stagnation and cultural malaise. Filmed during the Junta years, the film
bears the cinematic signature of the late Angelopoulos¹ subsequent films.

There will be a short introduction by Dr Vasilis Adrahtas, followed by
discussion after the screening.

Περίληψη τανίας

Ασπρόμαυρη ταινία που παρακολουθεί μέσα από φλασμπακ τον φόνο ενός επαναπατρισθέντα μετανάστη-εργάτη από την γυναίκα του και τον εραστή της σε ένα μικρό χωριό της Ηπείρου. Η ταινία κάνει αναφορά στο γενικότερο κοινωνικό πλαίσιο που υπέθαλψε το φόνο και μέσα από διαφορετικές έρευνες στα γεγονότα αναδύεται το πορτραίτο μιας κοινότητας που αργοπεθαίνει. [Γυρισμένη τα χρόνια της Χούντας, η ταινία φέρει την κινηματογραφική σφραγίδα του Θ. Αγγελόπουλου που συνοδεύει και τις επόμενες ταινίες του.]

Hostage (2005) 105′

Η ταινία ακολουθεί από απόσταση αναπνοής την ιστορία ενός νεαρού Αλβανού μετανάστη, του Ελιόν, που καταλαμβάνει, οπλισμένος με Kalashnikov και χειροβομβίδες, ένα λεωφορείο του ΚΤΕΛ λίγο έξω από την Θεσσαλονίκη και κρατά επτά από τους επιβάτες όμηρους. Το δράμα ενός άνδρα που προσπαθεί να ξαναφτιάξει τη ζωή του γίνεται πρώτο θέμα στα τηλεοπτικά δίκτυα, καθώς το λεωφορείο γίνεται επικεφαλής μίας αλλόκοτης αυτοκινητοπομπής που αποτελείται από περιπολικά, τηλεοπτικά συνεργεία, απελπισμένους συγγενείς και διάφορους περίεργους. Η ζωντανή μετάδοση της απαγωγής από τα κανάλια χαρίζει στον Ελιόν μια εφήμερη ηρωική υπόσταση κι εκείνος, σε μια σειρά από ονειρικές και κωμικές φαντασιώσεις, προσπαθεί να δικαιολογήσει τη βίαιη πράξη του. Το αυτοκαταστροφικό ταξίδι του Ελιόν είναι ένα ταξίδι μέσα στο Βαλκανικό τοπίο, γεμάτο συγκινήσεις, έντονη δράση, ανθρώπινες σχέσεις που διαμορφώνονται σε ασυνήθιστες, ακραίες συνθήκες. Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος του απαιτητικού γυρίσματος λαμβάνει χώρα μέσα στο λεωφορείο, ενώ έναυσμα για τη σύλληψη της ιστορίας αποτέλεσε το πραγματικό σχετικό περιστατικό του 1999.

These two award-winning documentaries deal with the phenomenon of young Athenians taking up a rural life. In the first, Yiannis takes on the shepherding occupation of his murdered cousin on the mountains of Crete. In the second, Theodoris, an IT consultant fed-up with the deteriorating life of the city, moves to the remote island of Ikaria to become self-sufficient, only to discover the traditional solidarity of the islanders who are known for their longevity. (Both documentaries have English narration and subtitles)
